The Inner Scarfing Remove Device is an essential accessory for an ERW Tube Mill, designed to remove the internal weld burr generated during high-frequency welding. Installed between the welding and sizing sections, it ensures a smooth inner surface while maintaining the pipe's dimensional accuracy.
For precision steel tubes, furniture tubing, automotive tubes, and mechanical pipes, internal burr removal greatly improves product quality and downstream processing performance
During the ERW welding process, the squeezed molten metal forms burrs on both the outside and inside of the tube. While the outer burr is removed by an external scarfing tool, the inner burr requires a cutting tool that works inside the pipe.
The device uses a tungsten carbide insert mounted on a scarfing rod to continuously remove only the excess weld bead without reducing the designed wall thickness.
●Remove internal weld burr continuously
●Improve the inside surface finish
●Maintain accurate pipe dimensions
●Protect the sizing section and downstream equipment
●Meet higher-quality tube production requirements
The inner scarfing unit is installed immediately after welding.
Removing the burr before the sizing section helps achieve better roundness, smoother internal surfaces, and more stable product quality.
The most important selection is choosing between Mechanical and Hydraulic types. The choice mainly depends on the pipe wall thickness and cutting force required.
The mechanical type uses a manual adjustment mechanism to position the cutting insert. Its structure is simple, reliable, and easy to maintain.
It is the standard choice for most light-wall ERW tube mills.
Recommended for:
Wall thickness: 0.5–4.0 mm
Carbon steel and galvanized steel tubes
Standard production speeds
Lower maintenance cost
Advantages:
Simple mechanical structure
Easy adjustment
Economical solution
Stable performance for thin-wall tubes
The hydraulic type uses hydraulic pressure to control the cutting tool, providing much stronger and more consistent cutting force during production.
For thicker pipes, the internal weld bead becomes larger and harder, making hydraulic scarfing the preferred solution.
Recommended for:
Wall thickness: Above 4.0 mm
Heavy-wall ERW pipes
High-strength steel materials
Large diameter tube mills
Advantages:
Powerful and stable cutting force
Better performance on thick-wall pipes
Higher cutting accuracy
Suitable for continuous heavy-duty production

| Item | Mechanical Type | Hydraulic Type |
| Drive Method | Mechanical adjustment | Hydraulic cylinder |
| Recommended Wall Thickness | Below 4.0 mm | Above 4.0 mm |
| Cutting Force | Standard | Heavy-duty |
| Structure | Simple | More robust |
| Maintenance | Easy | Moderate |
| Typical Application | Thin-wall tubes | Thick-wall tubes |
Many customers ask whether both devices are necessary. The answer depends on the final pipe application.
| Item | Inner Scarfing | Outer Scarfing |
| Removes | Internal weld burr | External weld burr |
| Tool Position | Inside the pipe | Outside the pipe |
| Adjustment | Internal cutting rod | External scraper |
| Difficulty | Higher precision | Easier |
| Required For | Precision & mechanical tubes | Nearly all ERW pipes |
Outer burr removal is almost standard on every tube mill, while inner burr removal is mainly selected for products requiring a clean internal surface.
Instead of selecting by diameter alone, consider these four parameters.
| Wall Thickness | Recommended Type |
| 0.8–2.0 mm | Mechanical |
| 2.0–4.0 mm | Mechanical |
| 4.0–6.0 mm | Hydraulic |
| Above 6.0 mm | Hydraulic (Customized) |
The scarfing rod and tool holder are customized according to the pipe size.
Tube Diameter | Configuration |
|---|---|
Φ16–32 mm | Small rod |
Φ32–76 mm | Standard rod |
Φ76–165 mm | Heavy-duty rod |
Above Φ165 mm | Customized design |
Carbon Steel → Standard carbide insert
GI Steel → Wear-resistant carbide
Stainless Steel → Premium carbide grade
Higher production speeds require stronger tool rigidity and more precise alignment, especially for hydraulic systems on thick-wall production.
| Parameter | Specification |
| Pipe Diameter | Φ16–165 mm |
| Wall Thickness | 0.8–6.0 mm+ |
| Production Speed | 20–150 m/min |
| Scarfing Type | Mechanical / Hydraulic |
| Insert Material | Tungsten Carbide |
| Installation Position | Between Welding & Sizing |
The configuration is customized according to the customer's ERW tube mill.

With these specifications, we can determine whether a Mechanical or Hydraulic Inner Scarfing Remove Device is the best solution for your production line.
If your maximum wall thickness is 4 mm or below, the mechanical type is generally sufficient. For wall thickness above 4 mm, the hydraulic type is recommended because it provides stronger and more stable cutting force.
Yes. The tungsten carbide insert is replaceable, allowing lower maintenance costs and shorter downtime.
No. Standard structural pipes may only require outer burr removal. Internal scarfing is mainly used for precision tubes, automotive tubing, furniture pipes, and other products requiring a smooth internal surface.
Yes. Most existing ERW tube mills can be equipped with a customized inner scarfing device after confirming the tube size, wall thickness, and installation space.
