A cold saw is a high-precision cutting machine widely used in ERW tube mills to cut welded steel tubes into fixed lengths while the tube is moving continuously. Unlike abrasive cutting methods, a cold saw uses a TCT (tungsten carbide tipped) circular blade that removes material with very little heat generation.
The result is a clean, square cut with smooth edges and minimal burrs, making it ideal for structural tubes, furniture tubes, automotive tubing, and other products that require excellent cutting quality.
●High cutting accuracy (typically ±0.5 mm)
●Smooth and burr-free cutting surface
●Low heat generation with no burnt edges
●Suitable for continuous online production
●Longer blade life with replaceable carbide tips

In a tube mill, the steel tube never stops moving. A flying cold saw synchronizes its carriage speed with the moving tube, performs the cut, and then returns to its starting position for the next cycle.
This flying cutting principle allows the production line to maintain high speed without interrupting forming or welding, greatly improving overall efficiency.
These three saws are the most common cutting solutions in tube manufacturing, but they serve different production requirements.
| Feature | Cold Saw | Friction Saw | Milling Saw |
| Cutting method | Carbide blade | High-speed friction blade | Dual milling cutters |
| Heat generation | Very low | Very high | Low |
| Cutting quality | Excellent | Good | Excellent |
| Burr level | Minimal | More burrs | Very low |
| Noise | Lower | Higher | Medium |
| Typical tube size | Small & medium | General production | Large diameter |
| Investment | Medium | Lower | Highest |
The cold saw is the best balance of speed, precision, and surface quality. It is the preferred choice for most modern ERW tube mills producing round, square, and rectangular tubes.
Typical applications include:
Construction tubes
Furniture tubing
Mechanical steel tubes
Automotive components

A friction saw cuts by rotating the blade at extremely high speed. The heat generated softens the material during cutting, allowing fast production with relatively low equipment cost.
It is suitable when production focuses more on output and economy than perfect cut surface quality.

A milling saw uses two milling heads to remove material from opposite sides of the tube simultaneously. Instead of slicing through the tube, it mills the wall thickness until separation.
This technology is commonly used for:
Large diameter ERW pipes
Thick-wall steel tubes
High-end industrial pipe production
Its cutting quality is excellent, especially for heavy-wall applications where ordinary circular saws become less efficient.

There is no universal answer. The correct choice depends on your production requirements rather than the saw alone.
| Production requirement | Recommended saw |
| Highest cutting quality | Cold Saw |
| Cost-effective production | Friction Saw |
| Large diameter & thick wall | Milling Saw |
| Minimal burrs | Cold Saw / Milling Saw |
Factors we normally evaluate include tube diameter, wall thickness, production speed, material grade, required length tolerance, and the customer's finished product quality standard.
Every tube mill has different specifications. A cold saw should be matched with the mill's speed, pipe size, and automation level to achieve stable synchronized cutting.
We provide customized flying cold saw solutions for both new and existing ERW tube mills, including:
Tube diameter matching
Wall thickness optimization
Servo flying synchronization
Automatic length control
Integration with existing PLC systems
TCT saw blade selection and technical support
Whether you are upgrading a friction saw or building a new ERW tube production line, we can design a cutting solution that fits your manufacturing process and production goals.
