An Eddy Current Testing Machine is a non-destructive testing (NDT) device that uses electromagnetic induction to detect defects in conductive materials.
Instead of cutting or destroying the pipe, the system generates an alternating magnetic field through a testing coil. When a steel tube passes through the coil, eddy currents are induced on its surface. Any discontinuity—such as a crack, pinhole, weld defect, or lack of fusion—changes the flow of these currents, allowing the system to identify the defect immediately.
This makes eddy current inspection ideal for 100% online inspection in high-speed ERW tube mills.
Weld seam cracks
Pinholes and porosity
Incomplete welding
Surface longitudinal cracks
Near-surface material defects
Local discontinuities in the weld area
The inspection process is continuous and fully automatic.
The tube passes through the inspection coil.
The probe generates a high-frequency alternating magnetic field.
Eddy currents form on the tube surface.
If a defect exists, the current distribution changes.
The signal is analyzed digitally and an alarm or mark is generated automatically.
Because the inspection is contactless, it does not scratch or deform the finished pipe.

In an ERW tube production line, the eddy current testing machine is typically installed after sizing and before final cutting or packing.
This position allows the system to inspect the finished tube dimensions and welded seam while maintaining production efficiency.
A complete eddy current testing system usually consists of several key parts working together.
| Component | Function |
| Testing probe | Generates the magnetic field and receives signals |
| Inspection coil | Surrounds the pipe for full circumferential inspection |
| Digital controller | Processes defect signals in real time |
| Display & software | Shows waveforms, alarms, and inspection data |
| Marking or alarm unit | Identifies defective tubes automatically |
Modern systems also support data storage, production statistics, and parameter recipes for different tube sizes.
Compared with manual inspection or destructive testing, eddy current testing offers significant production benefits.
✅100% online inspection
Every tube can be inspected during production.
✅Non-destructive
No cutting, deformation, or damage to the product.
✅High-speed operation
Suitable for continuous ERW tube mill production.
✅High sensitivity
Detects very small surface and near-surface defects.
✅Automatic quality control
Reduces dependence on visual inspection.
✅Lower production cost
Finds defects early and reduces customer complaints.
For manufacturers supplying export markets, consistent inspection records also improve product traceability and customer confidence.

Both technologies are widely used in the steel industry, but they serve different purposes.
| Feature | Eddy Current Testing | Ultrasonic Testing |
| Inspection type | Electromagnetic | Sound waves |
| Contact required | No | Usually yes |
| Surface defects | Excellent | Good |
| Near-surface defects | Excellent | Good |
| Internal defects | Limited | Excellent |
| Online high-speed inspection | Excellent | Good |
For most ERW welded tube production lines, eddy current testing is the preferred solution for rapid weld seam quality inspection, while ultrasonic testing is often selected when deeper internal defect detection is required.
Selecting the correct model depends more on your production line than simply choosing the highest specification.
Consider these factors:
Tube diameter range
Wall thickness
Material type (carbon steel or stainless steel)
Maximum production speed
Required defect sensitivity
Integration with your existing tube mill
A properly matched inspection system provides better stability and fewer false alarms during continuous production.
Quality inspection is no longer an optional step for many tube manufacturers. Customers increasingly require reliable weld quality, consistent documentation, and lower defect rates.
An Eddy Current Testing Machine helps manufacturers:
Improve weld quality control
Reduce defective products before shipment
Increase production reliability
Meet higher quality standards for export markets
Build customer confidence with non-destructive inspection
For new ERW tube mills or upgrading existing production lines, integrating an online eddy current testing system is a practical investment in both quality and long-term competitiveness.
Every Eddy Current Testing Machine we manufacture is fully tested and commissioned before shipment. Our engineers perform trial runs, verify signal stability, calibrate the inspection system, and ensure reliable defect detection under actual operating conditions. Only after the machine passes all functional tests is it approved for delivery.
Today, our eddy current testing systems are operating in the Middle East, Europe, Southeast Asia, and other international markets, helping tube manufacturers achieve stable online weld inspection and consistent product quality.
