Ferrite rods are essential consumable parts in every ERW Tube Mill high-frequency welding system. Installed inside the impeder, they concentrate the magnetic field and improve the efficiency of HF welding, resulting in stronger welds, lower power consumption, and more stable production.
At AIS Machinery, we supply both Round Ferrite Rods and Rectangle Ferrite Rods. While rectangle ferrite rods are available for specific applications, it is important to know that round ferrite rods are still the most commonly used type in the majority of ERW tube mills worldwide.
This article explains the differences between the two types and how to choose the right ferrite rod for your production line.
A ferrite rod is a magnetic ceramic core installed inside the impeder of an HF welder. Its job is to concentrate the high-frequency magnetic field into the V-shaped welding area, allowing the strip edges to heat efficiently before they are forged together by the squeeze rolls.
Increase high-frequency welding efficiency
Concentrate magnetic flux at the weld seam
Reduce electrical energy loss
Improve weld quality and penetration
Maintain stable production performance
Although small in size, ferrite rods have a significant influence on the overall performance of the welding system.

For most ERW tube mills, round ferrite rods are the standard and most widely used choice. They are compatible with conventional round impeder designs and provide reliable welding performance for a wide range of tube sizes.
Suitable for most standard impeders
Easy to replace and maintain
Excellent magnetic performance
Lower replacement cost
Widely available in different diameters
Whether producing carbon steel, galvanized steel, or stainless steel tubes, round ferrite rods remain the preferred solution for the majority of production lines.

Besides round ferrite rods, AIS Machinery also offers Rectangle Ferrite Rods for customers using specially designed impeders.
Rectangle ferrite rods provide a larger magnetic cross-sectional area, allowing better utilization of the impeder cavity. They are typically selected for medium and large tube mills with higher-power HF welding systems.
Large diameter ERW tube mills
High-power HF welders
High-speed production lines
Custom rectangle impeder designs
The 45 × 20 mm specification is the most commonly used rectangle ferrite rod in the industry.

| Feature | Round Ferrite Rod | Rectangle Ferrite Rod |
| Most common? | Yes | Less common |
| Impeder type | Round impeder | Rectangle impeder |
| Tube mill application | Most standard tube mills | Medium & large tube mills |
| Magnetic utilization | Excellent | Higher |
| Cost | More economical | Slightly higher |
In simple terms, round ferrite rods are suitable for most customers, while rectangle ferrite rods are usually chosen only when the impeder is specifically designed for them.
Rectangle ferrite rods are generally identified by their cross-sectional dimensions rather than diameter.
| Size | Description |
| 45 × 20 × 200 mm | Most common standard size |
| 45 × 20 × 150 mm | Short impeder version |
| 45 × 20 × 100 mm | Compact welding system |
Note: The most frequently supplied specification is 45 × 20 × 200 mm, and custom lengths are available upon request.
The correct ferrite rod depends more on the impeder design than on the pipe diameter alone.
Your tube mill uses a standard round impeder
You produce small or medium diameter pipes
You need the most common and economical solution
You want easy replacement and maintenance
Your impeder is designed for rectangle ferrite rods
You operate a higher-power HF welder
You produce medium or large diameter tubes
Maximum magnetic efficiency is required
Before ordering, we recommend providing:
Tube diameter range
Wall thickness
HF welder power
Impeder drawing or inner dimensions
Existing ferrite rod size
This allows us to recommend the most suitable specification for your tube mill.
AIS Machinery supplies a complete range of ERW Tube Mill Ferrite Rods, including both round and rectangle types. While round ferrite rods are the most commonly supplied products for standard tube mills, we also manufacture 45 × 20 mm rectangle ferrite rods and other customized specifications according to customer drawings.
With stable magnetic performance, precise dimensions, and reliable quality, our ferrite rods are designed to improve welding efficiency and reduce production costs.
